Welcome to jt-3d's
Virtual Sailor Page.
This is jt-3d's Virtual Sailor fanboy page.
This page needs a makeover badly since VS is now up to 6.5.
Some day.
Here I am sailing the addon Carribean scenery with
an addon schooner, La Toulonnaise.

This is some of Venice addon scenery. Pretty good for

In the end though, Virtual Sailor does sailing the best.
This is a great effort from Ilan Papini (I bet you thought it was a whole company). Though not realistic in all areas and somewhat system dependant, it is easy to use and add to. You have to have directX 8 and at least Windows98 (A VS veteran has reported that it will run in windows95 so now you have no excuse not to try it out). Like all graphics intensive apps, the better your system the better your performance. One thing I like is when you close it out it shuts off. No 30secs of writing files before you get most of your resources back. It shuts down and cleans up after itself. There are some bugs. I don't know if they are due to my running
Things I dislike: Unrealistic wave and boat interaction (you'll see what I mean). I find the seagulls annoying after a few hours. They can be turned off though. Really ugly default fish and they sometimes swim halfway out of the water. These are the 'x_fish', not the whale, shark, jellyfish, tuna, or dolphin. There are some cool animal addons at Dan's Age of Sail. The big waves continue even into long channels and harbors. Only one weapon allowed on a boat so you can't fire broadsides. Stars really kill the frames. Your captain is a white ball or a glowing lightbulb depending on whether you have the light turned on or not. There is a lot of places with nothing to see. There are some scenery areas that have detailed scenery in one place though. But this is a sailing sim and that means alot of time with no land in sight so scenery isn't always important. Note: there are fixes or workarounds for alot of my complaints but I am talking about default, out of the box.
Well, that's about all that is wrong with VS. It's really good, go get it!

Miscellaneous
Deck.cfg's:
These are small files that you add to the individual boat folders so that the water doesn't appear to be on the boat decks until gets above the side of the boat. This, known as clipping, has been a problem with VS but can be fixed to some extent on some boats. Just copy the text to notepad exactly as it is shown and save it as 'deck.cfg' into the boat folder that is indicated. If you don't have that boat you should go to the add on boats page and grab it since somebody thought it was worth fixing! OK, j/k, but the ones I do are really worth it so grab them. I post the actual text here rather than have a hundred little deck.cfg files on the server to keep track of. Anyway, enough of my blather, Columbia 22

This one was done by the boat builder, Rich.

Finn by Red Oktober
Caneton
This is one I tried to fix but
it sinks in the smallest waves. Can't fix that yet.
Sunfish
Another one that goes under pretty easily. I still
like it though.
Open Fishing Boat
La Toulonnaise
Maru
These should work. If not, email me because I must have done something stupid and would hate to not know about it. If you see a blue deck shaped object floating above the boat deck that means I have played with the boat alt in the boat.cfg and forgot. This would be one of the stupid things I alluded to. Just adjust the [deck alt] in the deck.cfg file to get it to set down where you want it.
Tip:
OK, things have changed. If you buy VS now it's still $25 but if you've had it a while you have to pay another $12.50 for the upgrade to VS6. That's $37.50. Whether or not there will be a VS7 and whether or not it will be a free upgrade will not be known until that time. Is it worth $37.50? To me, yes. I upgraded but I was a little let down by the pricing scandal. It's still $25 to a new sailor so try it out but the free upgrade part may not be true.
Cast off all lines...
If you're not sick of me by now, my main site is here.
Thanks to kugelfang we have all three together again.
Note: Though you can't see much of it this is VS6.5

This is a cool boat called the Fischer 30. It is
pretty stable in rough seas but has a tendancy to hop over waves.
I like boats that have sails and engines.

I challenge anybody to show me better wave action than this...

the Kilo sniffs one of her kills.
Addon boat, Botter.

Windows(the joke is on)ME or if the problem is with VS but overall, it's really nice. Try it and if the sea calls you, buy it.
Things I like: Lots of variable features. Lots of addon stuff. Fast startup and clean shut down. Accurate stars at night though there should be more of them. Sounds are good. Storms are awesome! Anyone can create boats and/or scenery for it using freeware tools. It's just fun and relaxing.
The Virtual Sailor Shipyard This site is tops for VS add-ons!
The VS Net is, I guess, the new latest, official, unofficial host for VS stuff. If it's out it's probably here. Finding it it kind of a pain but worth it.
Andres Marino's site. Andres has good stuff including parts and pieces for making scenery.
Millinium Dock Alan's Add-ons, come on down. Good stuff.
Port of Call Great fleet of old ships. (Also has addon planes for Ilan's other sim, Microflight)
Dan's Age of Sail Dan's not around much these days but I suspect he's up to something.
Red Oktober's sub base Another VSer who has been missing but has recently resurfaced with more project's in the tubes.
Rich's Chum Bucket The place for the more fanciful vessels. A comprehensive links page too.

To make deck.cfg yourself check this link. Or you can look on the boat design page. Fix em up and let me see em, please. One last thing. After sailing for awhile or changing scenery or boats a few times you may notice a slow down in frame rates. If you click Options/Game and then click OK your frames will come back up. I think this has to do with the wake getting reset. Anyway, this will work several times.
This has been fixed in VS6.
